Xelas Magazine

Guidelines for Writers

Xelas Magazine accepts submissions of poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, literary criticism, and book reviews. The next reading period, for publication in the January '08 issue, ends November 14, 2007. For prose, please submit no more than two works per reading period.

General Guidelines

Xelas Magazine is looking for poetry and prose that offers distinct perspectives on the individual's relationship to place. We welcome submissions from all over the world, with a slight preference for quality work presented by writers born in, living in, or otherwise inspired by the Pacific Northwest. We are not seeking work that blindly fetishizes foreign (or local) cultures, either through name-dropping or tired stereotypes, but writing that explores regional mentalities in a much deeper, more inquisitive way.

We do not consider previously published work. We accept simultaneous submissions, but please be courteous: let us know if your piece is accepted for publication elsewhere. We typically require two to three weeks to reach consensus regarding your submissions. If you have not heard from us a month after the submission cut-off date, you may send an e-mail requesting an update on your submission's status.

We accept most word processing files formatted for Mac or PC. If we are unable to read your file, we will request you reformat and resubmit it.

We ask for first North American rights on any work accepted for publication. Rights revert to the author after publication, though we reserve the right to re-publish your poetry or prose in the event of print-based anthologies appearing at a later date. We also ask that you credit Xelas Magazine in future publications of the accepted piece.

Prose Guidelines

We consider short fiction (from flash to 8,000 words), creative non-fiction (up to 4,000 words), and book reviews (up to 750 words). Please keep book reviews current: within the last two years for poetry, and within the last year for prose. Creative non-fiction is an open-ended category, but preference will be given to narratives that explore the unfamiliar in familiar landscapes, urban or otherwise.

For longer works or multiple submissions, please send attached files. Submit work to the Prose Editors with "[Genre] Submission" in the subject line.

Poetry Guidelines

We consider formal and free verse poetry alike. The emphasis, again, is on work that explores relationships between individuals and the places they inhabit. Please, no poems about poetry. Submit up to six poems per reading period to the Poetry Editors with "[Genre] Submission" in the subject line. You may include your poems in the body of your e-mail or send them as an attached file.

We also accept translations of poetry from a foreign language. Please submit the original poem along with your translation. The translator is responsible for securing author permissions.
